Staged Car Accidents

New Jersey has no-fault car insurance, making its drivers vulnerable to staged car accidents. Staged car accidents occur in wealthier areas because the victims are most likely to have adequate car insurance. These phony accidents cost legitimate drivers millions of dollars in false claims and inflated insurance premiums. Here are some tactics to watch out for.

  • Swoop and squat: A car suddenly pulls in front of you, then suddenly stops, causing an intentional rear-end collision.

  • Drive down: While trying to merge into a lane of traffic, a driver waves you forward and then deliberately drives into your car, blaming you for the accident.

  • Sideswipe: While making a left turn from a dual-turn lane, you are side swiped by another car whose driver accuses you of moving out of your lane.

  • T-Bone: While driving through an intersection, a driver intentionally slams into your car, then accuses you of running the stop sign.

  • The wave: While trying to change lanes in heavy traffic, another driver gestures you over, but then rams into your car.

Staged car accidents require your vigilance. Never settle on the spot. Take pictures of the cars, the other driver, any passengers, and witnesses. Record their heights, ethnicities, and any other distinguishing characteristics. Scam artists are vulnerable to the facts and you can fight back with evidence. Don’t rely on memory. Be sure to take good notes. Insist on getting:

  • Driver’s license number
  • Vehicle registration information
  • Car insurance information
  • Name, address and phone number

If you are suspicious of the circumstances, immediately call the police.

Although New Jersey is a no-fault car insurance state, there are consequences to getting into an accident. Consult with an experienced attorney to make sure that you are getting the full benefits and protections from your automobile insurance policy.
